Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such treatments need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
