Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the option to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
